I still remember the first time I saw Morbius comics, it was Rise of the Midnight Sons and I was hooked ever since. Morbius reminds me of Lestat from “Interview with a Vampire”. He was turned but is still a Living Vampire. At the time I had no idea who Morbius was and even if he was a good or bad guy. So if you are curious about who he is or want a refresher this post is for you.
Who is Morbius
Dr. Michael Morbius is a scientist who was born with a blood disease. While attempting to cure himself using a Vampire bat he ended up turning himself into a pseudo-vampire. He has the strength and speed but not the magical powers like being able to turn into a bat. The one thing he does share with Vampires like Dracula is a bloodthirst that at times is uncontrollable. This has put him into some bad situations in which some people close to him have died. It has also put him into some battles with other Marvel Hero’s including the X-Men and Spiderman. As far the movies the original Blade movies cut ending showed Morbius standing on a building. This was supposed to lead to a meet-up in blade 2 which did not happen and the footage was cut from the movie. Now a new Blade movie is being produced for the MCU and the Morbius movie is being created by Sony. So as much as the fans think it would be great it does not look like they will meet up in the new set of movies either.
Is Morbius a Hero or Villain (Good or Bad)
If you read the Morbius comics or any comic that he makes an appearance you will wonder if he is a hero or villain. When he is fighting Spider-Man you would assume he is a Villain but if you read more about him you will realize that he is more a victim of circumstance. A man who is cursed with an uncontrollable bloodthirst and a desire for a cure. This leads him into situations where a good guy maybe in his way. If you wanted to define him he would fit into the antihero class.
Is Morbius Stronger than Dracula
If you are wondering if based on just their natural abilities if Morbius is strong enough to outpower Dracula well I am sad to say there is no way Dracula is just about twice as strong as Morbius. If you are curious can Morbius take old Dracula in a fight, that’s a different story. If you have read any of the Morbius Comics you will have learned that he doesn’t have the same weaknesses as true vampires. He was made through science and not through the bite of a blood drinker. This gives him a few advantages over Dracula. The first is that Dracula won’t be able to control him like he can other vampires. The other major advantage is that Morbius will not be hurt by the sun. Therefore if he can survive until daylight he will win the fight hands down.
Is Morbius a Vampire or Werewolf
There was a time in the comics that Morbius tried to become a werewolf but it didn’t stick. Morbius is not a natural vampire created by the bite of a vampire instead he is a vampire created through science and his own experiments to cure his blood disorder. So the final definition for Morbius is that he is a pseudo-vampire.
Is Michael Morbius Immortal
If you define immortality in terms of does he age the answer is yes Morbius is an immortal. He does not age and he regenerates when injured. What is not known is will he find the cure for what he turned himself into and then in turn remove his immortality. Depending on how old he is when he figured out the cure could be an interesting twist of fate. How crazy would it be to have him cure himself and realize he is 105 years old….. then dies.
Who is Stronger Spiderman or Morbius
When it comes to strength between Spiderman and Morbius they are equal. Where Morbius shines is he is a little more durable and a little faster. So if they both threw a punch at the same time well Spiderman would be the one to get hit first. In most of the Morbius comics where he has faced spiderman, he has lost but not because of a one on one fair fight. Usually will have help to take on Morbius. This includes the first appearance of Morbius in Amazing Spiderman #101 – 102. Lizardman, The Human Torch, and even the X-Men have fought alongside Spiderman to handle the Living Vampire Morbius.
Why is Morbius called the Living Vampire
The reason Morbius is called the living vampire is that he is still alive and not a true vampire. He turned himself into a pseudo-vampire using science. This gave him the blood hunger, the strength, and speed of a vampire but he didn’t gain all of the flaws. Being alive he can still go out in the sun, wear a cross and jump into a pile of garlic with no problems. On the other hand, he does miss out on some of the more mystical abilities of true vampires. For example, he can’t turn himself into a bat or any other animal. Although depending on the situation he is drawn to look very much like a bat.
Will Morbius be in the MCU
I have read all of the build-ups and to date and saw the first trailer. I know that the fans including myself want Sony and Disney to just get past it and pay whatever it takes to make one marvel universe. Which I think will eventually happen. and I think Sony understands it as well. The fans want it all together and I can’t see Sony making the money on their own, so they are going to build the product. Instead of selling Spiderman back now for a ton of money, they are going to build up the spider verse and as many other characters as they can. Then they will sell it all to be part of the MCU for wayyyyy more money. For the fans I see it being good because hopefully by the time they set up Rise of the Midnight Sons or Total Carnage the deal is done. Then we can enjoy some great comic magic in the MCU with characters that may have not been on their radar. On the other hand, Disney may just scrap it all and take Spiderman in the end. Either way, based on what I have seen I don’t think we will see Morbius in the MCU anytime soon.
Who is the DC Version of Morbius
With so many comics from both franchises, it’s hard not to tie similar characters as each side’s version. Unlike some of the more obvious ties between the two companies in this case there isn’t a fan agreed on doppelganger. In the case of Man-Bat from DC, they do share some of the same types of storylines. Both are scientists who turn themselves into half-man half-bat creatures. Other than that their powers are very different. The reasons behind why they did the experiments are different. One was to cure himself while the other was to enhance himself. So at the base of what they are, I would say they are similar but as they have grown in each universe I would be more on the side of Man-Bat and Morbius not being each other’s doppelganger from the other universe. Let me know in the comments if you have someone else in mind.
Conclusion
Morbius is a great untapped gem in the Marvel Universe. He has been a part of many groups and had fights with some heavy hitters. I am hoping that when Sony puts out his movie it will bring in a group of fans that would have never noticed him before. His storyline is filled with disappointment and tragedy, but he is also able to save many people along the way. He is a smart scientist able to cure things like Spiderman’s extra arms and the Lizard transformation but just can’t seem to save himself. I truly hope that he makes his way into the MCU one day but like I said before I don’t see it happening in his first movie. It’s more likely he will have a movie later down the road with Venom fighting some other villain like Carnage….. I would be ok with that battle.
